Pequot Lakes spikers split home matches



The Pequot Lakes Patriots volleyball team split a pair of home matches - losing 3-2 against Pillager on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and then sweeping Staples-Motley 3-0 in a Mid-State Conference match on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Against the Huskies, Coach Sandy Tautges' squad won the first game 25-22, lost the second 23-25, won the third 25-23 before dropping the next two 19-25 and 10-15.

The first game with Pillager was close all the way and was tied seven times before the Patriots took a 22-17 lead on Renee Kardell's block and kills by Mattie and Emily Lueck.

The Huskies did get back to within 24-22, but Abby Palmer's kill gave the Patriots he 25-22 win.

In the second game the Patriots led most of the way before the Huskies got their first lead at 21-20 and went on to win by 23-25.

The Patriots jumped to a 5-0 lead in game three and led by as much as 17-9, but the Huskies came back to make it close and pull to within 24-23 before Mattie Lueck's kill ended it at 25-23.

The Huskies took a 12-1 lead at the start of game four when Emily Doss served 11 straight points and the Patriots never did recover as the Huskies tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-19 win.

The fifth and deciding game was tied at 8-8 before the Huskies outscored the Patriots 7-2 the rest of the way to win by 15-10 on Kaylie Hanson's kill.

Chelsea Walton had four kills and 16 blocks; Emily Lueck had nine blocks, five kills and two ace serves; Renee Kardell had four digs, four ace serves, five kills and four blocks; Rachael Mott had six kills and four blocks; Kendra Johnson had five blocks and 10 kills and Mattie Lueck had three ace serves, four kills, two blocks and 14 set assists.

They beat the Cardinals on Thursday by scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-22.

In the first game the score was close all the way, but the Patriots led most of the way. They won it at 25-23 on Kardell's kill.

In game two the Cards jumped to a 7-1 lead before the Patriots battled back to take a 11-9 lead on kills by Kirsten Noska and Kardell.

Then Noska served eight straight points, including three aces for a 19-9 lead, and they went on to win by 25-18.

The third game saw the Cards jump ahead by 5-0, but Chelsea Ekeberg served seven straight points for a 10-9 lead. The Patriots never would trail again with Kardell serving the final point to win it by 25-22.

Walton had 12 blocks and five kills; Emily Lueck had a kill and 24 digs; Kardell had three blocks and nine kills; Mott had four blocks and two kills; Noska had three blocks, 10 kills and five ace serves; Johnson had eight blocks and four kills and Mattie Lueck had four blocks, three kills, three ace serves and 34 set assists.

Nikki Pearson led the Cards with seven kills and two blocks.

Coach Tautges said, "We did play better, and it was a big win for us as we really needed to win one."
