Chainsaw Sculpting Invitational this weekend in Hackensack

Ten top chain saw carvers will compete in the fourth annual National Chainsaw Sculpting Invitational Sept. 26-28 in the Hackensack City Park.

Competing for $13,000 in prizes will be Brad Sharp, Rio Dell, Calif.; Don Etue, Hoquiam, Wash.; Dayton Scoggins, Sandersville, Miss.; Jeff Samudosky, Columbia, Conn.; Karen Barker, Eldon, Miss.; Lisa Temanson, Hamilton, Mont.; Jamie Doeren, Abrams, Wis.; James Madsen, a Pennsylvania native; Niato Wataru, Toei, Japan; and Steve Higgins, Sunland Park, N.M.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, Brian Ruth will perform a show at 3 p.m., which will be interspersed with guest carvers and judges doing welcome signs and other small pieces.

At the conclusion of the show, an auction will be held on all of the judges' quick carves, the smaller pieces done during the show and what Ruth has carved.

On Sunday, Sept. 28, after work on all of the masterpieces is completed, there will be a quick carve and the auction at 2 p.m.

A Carver's Banquet on Sept. 25 at Northern Lights Casino's Convention Center will feature a buffet dinner, entertainment by comedian C. Willie Myles, and a live auction of carvings done by some of the carvers.

There's also a Chainsaw Village outside the carving tent, which includes the works of several artisans, and a food court, providing a variety of foods.

Entrance to the National Chainsaw Sculpting Invitational is $5 for adults, and free for children 12 and under. The $5 charge provides the participant with a wrist band, which allows them to come and go in the area for all three days.
