Varsity volleyball falls to Aitkin

The Pine River-Backus Tigers varsity volleyball team was defeated by the Aitkin Gobblers, Aug. 26.

It was a hard fought game that went all five matches. The Tigers won the first match 25-16.

They started the match out with a four-point run thanks to excellent serving by Katie Wangberg, who also served for a three point run later in the match.

The Tigers served five aces including two by Kendra Hamilton, and they also had nine kills with three of them coming from Crysta Christensen.

The second match started off badly for the Tigers when the Gobblers came out and scored four points in a row. They never looked back and the Tigers never caught up. They lost 18-25.

The Tigers came back in the third match and won 25-16, just like their first match.

They scored a point right away then went down a point as the Gobblers scored two, but the Tigers came back with a six-point run with five of the points coming while Hamilton was serving.

The Tigers had eight kills including a beautiful play that ended the match.

Castona Rodriguez served the ball and it was volleyed about three times before Christensen made a nice dig, off a near kill by the Gobblers, which was set up for Wangberg who made the kill to end the match.

Unfortunately, winning two matches was not enough to win the game as the Gobblers came back and won the last two matches to get the game win.

They won the final two matches by scores of 25-27 and 13-15. Coach Collin Frazier commented about the game, "I think the girls fought hard all night. It was a tough loss, but Aitkin played hard and deserved to win, but when you play as well as we did in games one and three, and having a match point in game four, it feels like we let one get away. We're a young team, and I know the girls will work hard at improving before our next match."
