A learning opportunity

Robin Ward
The second week of school started with a unique opportunity at Emily Charter School.

Mrs. Amsden, a classroom teacher, spotted a dead mature eagle on the side of Highway 3 between Crosslake and Fifty Lakes. After pulling over and contacting the authorities, Amsden brought the eagle to school to wait for Conservation Officer Nikki Shoutz to arrive.

All of the Emily Charter School students were able to observe the eagle.

The fifth- and sixth-grade students had the opportunity to examine the eagle more closely. They found the eagle's wing span to be about 75 inches. The beak was 4 inches, talons were 2 1/2 inches, and the eagle weighed about 10 pounds.Ê
