Tigers open with 32-12 win

Abbot rushes for 126 yards, scores three touchdowns

Ben Kline carries the ball
The Pine River-Backus football team got the new season off on the right foot with a 32-12 thumping of Cass Lake-Bena. Senior Glen Abbott led the Tigers, piling up 126 yards with three touchdowns and Levi Allen had 19 tackles to lead the defense, which forced four turnovers in the win.

The CL-B offense again failed to move the ball on their next two possessions. Allen returned the ensuing punts, giving PR-B great field position but the Tigers were unable to take advantage and CL-B got the ball back on downs both times. Midway through the second quarter, the PR-B defense got another stop and the special teams got another big return.

On first down from the Panther 38-yard line, Abbott took the pitch for 11 yards. Allen picked up a yard and Abbott carried for another seven yards before senior quarterback Ben Kline took it down to the one-yard line on a keeper. Abbott carried it in from one yard out for a 12-0 lead with 2:07 to go in first half.

PR-B began its first possession of the second half on its 45-yard line. Kline hit Farmer on a swing pass for a six-yard pick-up. Abbott then carried for 11 yards for a first down on the Panther 38-yard line. Allen carried for eight yards and an off-sides penalty made it first down on the 25-yard line. Allen rushed for four more yards before Kline took it to the 12-yard line on a keeper. Two plays later Abbot took it into the end zone from six yards out for an 18-0 lead with 7:46 to play in the third quarter.

CL-B again went three-and-out and PR-B got the ball back on its 49-yard line. On first down Kline hit Brian Plantz over the middle and Plantz scampered 51 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was no good and the Tigers pushed the lead to 24-0 with 5:14 to go in the third quarter.

Following the kickoff, the Panthers caught PR-B flat-footed and got a big 33-yard pick up for just their second first-down of the game on the Tiger 36-yard line. A pass interference penalty against PR-B moved the ball down to the 13-yard line. An 11-yard run moved the ball to the two-yard line and two plays later the Panthers banged it in from one yard out to finally get on scoreboard at 24-6 with 27 seconds to play in the quarter.

The Tigers were unable to move the ball to open the fourth quarter but Jacob Joy made a sliding interception of a Cass Lake pass to get the ball back on the Panther 41-yard line. PR-B was unable to move the ball and CL-B blocked the ensuing punt to get the ball on the Tiger 43-yard line.

Six rushes and a 21-yard pass completion moved the Panthers inside the 5-yard line. The Panthers then rushed it in from one yard out, cutting the lead to 24-12 with 5:41 to play in the game.

Allen returned the kickoff to the PR-B 42-yard line. On first down Abbott took the hand-off around the left end and out-raced the defense to the end zone for a touchdown with 5:21 to play. On the two-point conversion attempt, Kline rolled right and hit Mitchell Kline in the end zone for the 32-12 final score.

The Tigers carried the ball for 224 yards, passed for another 57 yards for 281 total yards of offense. The Panthers had 137 yards on 41 carries and completed three passes for 55 yards for 192 total yards.

Abbott led PR-B with 126 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns. Ben Kline rushed for 55 yards and Allen added 38 yards. Kline completed two of his 10 passes for 57 yards. Plantz had one catch for 51 yards and a touchdown, and Farmer had one catch for six yards and added a rushing touchdown.

"Levi Allen played really well defensively with 18 or 19 tackles," Tiger coach Randy Schwegel said. "Glen Abbott, of course, was the key guy on offense. I thought Ben Kline passed the ball well but we just should have had more catches. He threw a strike on that pass to Brian Plantz and Plantz showed some speed getting to the end zone."

"I'm really happy with the way some of the younger kids played," Schwegel continued, "but we need more out of our kids up front. Plus, the defense fell asleep once we got up 24-0. We have some things that we will need to work on this week."

"Bagley got beat pretty bad Friday but they always play us tough up there, so I think this week will be a close game."

"Both teams will be making the trip to Bagley on Friday and we will be going up early," Schwegel added. "With the cost of transportation, we need to limit our traveling, so the JV will scrimmage Bagley before the game."

With the win, the Tigers improve to 1-0 overall and travel to Bagley Sept. 5 to take on the Flyers in an important conference matchup. The Flyers dropped their opener with Warren-Alvarado-Oslo 36-0.
