The Pequot Lakes community received an unusual gift from Dr. Harry E. Olson Jr. who presented to the library a restored antique popcorn wagon.
Olson purchased the Amish-built popcorn wagon in 1993 to display at the Pequot Lakes Centennial Celebration in 1994.
The horse-driven wagon was built in an Amish community in Wisconsin. The exact date of its construction is unclear; however, Olson has traced it back to the 1920s.
The popcorn wagon has been refurbished to meet all the Minnesota health code standards, including hot and cold running water, three sinks for clean-up, full electric supply and a propane popper.
Thanks go to a number of people who assisted with the restoration; special appreciation goes to Art Schaub, Jim Young, Karl Skog and Crosslake Sheet Metal.
Olson has been a supporter of the Pequot Lakes Library since its beginning and encourages others to share in this endeavor. The library continues to function only on the generous gifts of the "Friends of the Library" without government tax money.
The popcorn wagon will be a visible reminder to the community that only through the support of volunteers and financial contributions will the library be able to meet the needs of our community. "Keep Pequot Popping!"
