Literacy Collaborative to expand

PEQUOT LAKES SCHOOL BOARD

Literacy Collaborative is expanding into all grades at Eagle View Elementary School, the school board learned Monday night.

The program began in 2007 in kindergarten through second grade. Literacy Collaborative coordinator Allison Reigel attended training for the program during the 2007-08 school year. She then brought back her skills and first used them in her own classroom. Then over the next two years she trained the rest of the staff in kindergarten through second grade.

Eagle View Principal Don Lenzen said the program has been a success, and each student is having amazing results with the program.

Now the program is getting ready to expand to grades three through five.

Kathie Harman will be the Literacy Collaborative coordinator for third through fifth grades, and she will receive seven weeks of training this year. She will incorporate her training into her own classroom this year.

Next year, 2011-12, she will begin to train half of the third- through fifth-grade teachers and then in 2012-13 she will begin training the rest of the teachers.

The Literacy Collaborative Framework has three main components - reading, writing and word work. Reading and writing are both community and independent activities. Word work involves phonic lessons, spelling and handwriting.

One large focus of the framework is having differentiated instruction so each student is working at his or her individual level.

"The biggest thing is the differentiation in instruction in literacy for every student. We take them where they are and challenge them where they are," Lenzen said.

This framework of teaching makes the classroom look a little different.

Students are divided into small groups, and they are up and moving around as they accomplish different tasks. This framework also promotes independent study.
