Nisswa Lions co-sponsor Tee It Up for the Troops event

The Nisswa Lions, Lions District 5M9, the Nisswa American Legion and Grand View Lodge all co-sponsored a fundraiser for Project New Hope on Aug. 26-27.

Tee It Up for the Troops had 25 golf teams and 26 veterans take part at The Pines golf course and Grand View's Gull Lake Center, where dinner was served Aug. 26. A 2011 red Mustang GT convertible was raffled. Veterans could also fish Aug. 27.

Project New Hope is a retreat for returning veterans from Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam. One retreat is located on Glacier Lake near McGregor. It is entirely free to veterans and their families with boats available.

Through education, training and counseling, Project New Hope heals and helps the veterans and their families adjust to a normal peace time life. The Minnesota Veterans Service provides free counselors.

Minnesota was the first state to set up a Project New Hope. There are now projects in Wisconsin, Iowa and New York, with a goal to have one in every state by 2016, as well as in 10 Canadian Provinces.
