Mentors can make a difference in the lives of children

Mentoring makes a big difference. According to the Charity Guild, when kids enjoy a regular, positive activity with an adult over the course of a year, those kids are 46 percent less likely to begin using drugs, 27 percent less likely to begin using alcohol and 52 percent less likely to skip school.

This decreases drug-related suspensions, drug-related crime and the number of babies born drug-affected.

Mentors are desperately needed to provide friendship and direction to at-risk children. Family tragedy, divorce and financial problems can leave a child lonely and longing for adult support. These children need someone to come alongside them to help with school work, have a listening ear and show encouragement.

Currently in the Crosby area there are 12 children on the waiting list. Of those 12 children, eight have been waiting for more than 12 months and one for almost two years.

Children guided by a successful role model are more likely to improve their academic performance through better decision-making skills, self-confidence and sense of belonging. Youth in mentoring programs tend to have better relationships with parents, teachers and peers. They are also more likely to attend and graduate from college.

Only two hours a week can help change the life of a child. Please take the first step to becoming a Kinship Partner mentor by calling 218-829-4606 or 877-730-KIDS (5437). For more information about Kinship Partners, check our website at www.kinshippartners.org.
