Habitat for Humanity, Thrivent Financial team up to build home

Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity (LAHFH) and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans are once again joining forces to build a home in Walker this fall.

An informational meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker. All interested are encouraged to attend. Experience is not required. Construction, site hosts and food volunteers are needed. Dates will be announced and registration will begin at the meeting.

Available shifts for the first week of framing are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m., with 15-25 volunteers needed for each shift. Volunteers can sign up individually or as a group. For more information or to sign up for a shift, contact Laurie Ziebell, Volunteer Coordinator, at 218-828-8517.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has partnered with LAHFH to build 10 homes since 2006. The home will be built primarily by volunteers working alongside the family who will purchase the home. It will take approximately 6 weeks and roughly 1,200 volunteer hours to complete the build. The national program, Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, provides 65 percent of the construction costs for each home, with local Thrivent chapters and Lutherans raising an additional 10 percent. Lutheran volunteers are requested to make up half of the volunteer workers to meet grant guidelines, but all volunteers are welcome.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is a not-for-profit membership organization. As a fraternal benefit society, they sponsor national outreach programs and activities that support a variety of organizations and individuals in need.

Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that serves Cass, Crow Wing and Hubbard counties; the organization is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Since 1991, LAHFH has formed a hands-up partnership with 73 families resulting in homeownership.
