Klang: Watch inappropriate Internet usage

Recently I attended a class called "Internet Crimes Against Children." As a parent myself, I want to remind others about the dangers of the Internet that can surface. We were informed that 90 percent of the parents interviewed said they knew what their children were looking at on the Internet. In actuality, the kids said that 61 percent knew what they were looking at. Please investigate what your kids are looking at.

One particular site that most of us are aware of is myspace.com. This space can be a great way for kids to meet each other, but can also be terribly revealing and allow too much exposure of our kids and open them up to predators. In fact, one of our county deputies signed on to myspace posing as a 13-year-old girl and within one hour had two questionable contacts from adult men in our area.

Please, protect your kids - protect our future. Know what they are looking at and who they are talking to on the Internet.

Working for you and your family.

Sheriff Eric Klang,

Crow Wing County
