Nisswa hires public works director

The Nisswa City Council hired Thomas Blomer of Avon as the city's public works director at $50,000 per year.

City Planner Loren Wickham told the city council Wednesday, Aug. 15, that the city received many good applications and interviewed eight people. Three returned for second interviews.

Blomer, who started Monday, Aug. 20, succeeds Joel Jasmer, who assumed a similar position with East Gull Lake in July after working 12 years with the city of Nisswa.

Hole-in-the-Day Drive home

Wickham told the council the planning commission reissued a variance for construction to resume on a home on Hole-in-the-Day Drive, with several conditions.

The commission originally granted a building permit for construction in 2004, but revoked the permit in March 2005 when the homeowner at the time began building a larger home than was anticipated. It has sat half built for more than two years.

Derrick Taylor owned the property previously. Now his mother, Uta Bender, owns it.

Public safety

In July, the Nisswa Police Department had 264 calls for service. Officers had 47 agency assists, issued 77 citations and 78 warnings, made 14 arrests and responded to seven medicals and eight alarms.

The council agreed to participate in the Minnesota Safe and Sober campaigns.
