Golf courses cater to clientele

One adds a clubhouse; another expands

Crosswoods Golf Course doubled the size of its clubhouse.
Two lakes area courses, Crosswoods Golf Course in Crosslake and Wildwedge Golf Course in Jenkins, made significant clubhouse changes this summer.

Crosswoods doubled the size of its old clubhouse by adding a 1,000-square-foot restaurant while Wildwedge now has a new clubhouse located between the mini golf and par 3 course.

At Crosswoods, owners Mike and Kelly Stone said the addition came about because of growing leagues and the increased interest in dining before or after playing.

"A lot of leagues are planning functions with food," said Mike, whose restaurant has approximately 10 breakfast and dinner items. "We were looking for a diverse menu and we listened to what people wanted."

The facility, Crosswoods Grill Restaurant, also has a 1,200-square-foot outside deck that wraps around the restaurant. The inside and outside area can seat about 120 people.

"A lot of people like the atmosphere," Mike said, "but you don't have to be a golfer to eat here."

Golfers who plan to eat after playing can order ahead on a radio call box on the eighth tee.

"That gives us about 20 minutes to get the food ready," Mike said.

Crosswoods features an 18-hole and nine-hole (par 3) course along with a driving range and pro shop.

Wildwedge clubhouse opens

Wildwedge's new clubhouse is open, although outside landscaping work continues.

"We still have a lot of landscaping and decorating to do," said Jill Beyer, who along with her husband, Todd, owns the mini golf and par 3 course. "It will be all done next spring."

Completing the clubhouse at Wildwedge was a long-time goal for the Beyers.

"We always planned on building a clubhouse," she said. "We just needed the time to do it."

The clubhouse features an arcade with darts and video games. The plan is to also serve food - like pizza and hot dogs. The clubhouse will also have a tropical theme.

"We wanted to do something fun and different from the normal moose, bear, up north theme everybody does around here," Beyer said. "We thought of the (tropical) theme when we were on vacation last year."

The ceiling of the clubhouse looks like a sky with clouds. It was painted by Pequot Lakes High School teacher Dave Guenther.Ê

"We also plan on getting some large artificial palmÊtrees for outside," she said.

One other outside touch is Fanny the Ox, a large attraction located just north of the clubhouse.

"Our Fanny is Babe's girlfriend that he met while on vacation in Hawaii," Beyer said. "She comes back to summer at Wildwedge and is also Paul Bunyan's caddy."

Beyer added the new clubhouse would be ideal for employee or family gatherings.
