Veteran drivers dominate at BIR

Schumacher, Pedregon, Johnson triumph

Three drivers who combine for 129 National Hot Rod Assocation national victories captured titles Sunday at Brainerd International Raceway.

Tony Schumacher earned his 50th career Top Fuel championship at the Lucas Oil Nationals Sunday. The veteran dragster driver earned hisÊfourth straight win and ninth of the season with a 3.864-second pass at 310.05 mphÊin the final - topping Cory McClenathan's time of 3.90 at 306.74 mph.

It was the third title for Schumacher at BIR as the season points leader moves just two national wins from tying the all-time NHRA record of 52 Top Fuel wins by Joe Amato.

Meanwhile, Tony Pedregon earned his 40th career title in Funny Car racing when he cruised across the finish line after Jack Beckman red-lighted in the final. It was Pedregon's fourth win of the season and moved him into second place in the season standings. Ashley Force, who was top qualifier, was upset by Ron Capps, in the early rounds on Sunday.

In Pro Stock racing, Minnesota native Kurt Johnson won his 39th career title by defeating Dave Connolly in the final. Johnson, who moved into second in the 2008 standings,Êearned his fourth BIR title with a time of 6.671 at 207.05 mph to hold off Connolly, who stopped the clock at 6.696 at 206.29 mph. Kurt and hisÊdad, Warren, along with Bob Glidden and Bruce Allen, are all tied with the most wins at BIR with four.

The Lucas Oil Nationals are the 16th of 18 NHRA events heading into the Countdown to 10 races.
