MDHA Bluewater Chapter plans events
By Kelly Virden
The local Bluewater Chapter of Minnesota Deer Hunters Association is focused not only on conservation but on community support as well.
The chapter has kicked off its year with a bang with plans for a youth event, an annual banquet and community donations.
The Bluewater Chapter, with more than 280 members, has several events planned for this year.
The chapter sponsors its 11th annual Forkhorn Day for youth ages 12-15 with a firearm training certificate Sept. 27.
The activity - held in Blind Lake Township northeast of Pine River - includes dog training, clay-target and .22-caliber target shooting, and a pheasant hunt.
The shapter's annual state habitat banquet will April 4 at Breezy Point Resort.
The event is designed to raise matching grants dollars for statewide wildlife habitat projects.
Club members will sell tickets closer to the event.
The Bluewater Chapter held its kick-off meeting this month, hearing from DNR Wildlife Manager Gary Drotts of Brainerd. Drotts reported on new hunting regulations that impact deer hunters this fall.
Find a copy of the 2008 regulations anywhere hunting or trapping licenses are sold or at www.dnr.state.mn.us/regulations/hunting/index.html.
The chapter also voted affirmatively to award two $500 academic scholarships this spring; one to a Pine River-Backus student, one to a Pequot Lakes student.
The Bluewater Chapter also donates to the Minnesota Broken Wing Connection - a pheasant hunt for disabled hunters - held west of Pine River Sept. 5-7.
