Despite taking a wrong turn, Justin Grunewald of Merrifield continued his dominance of the Crosslake Dam Run on Saturday, Aug. 4.
Grunewald, 21, a 2004 Brainerd High School graduate and standout high school runner, beat his own course record in the 5K race with a time of 15:10.
As he crossed the finish line at Crosslake Town Square, Grunewald said he had taken a wrong turn and started following the 10K race course.
He holds both the 5K and 10K Crosslake Dam Run records. In 2003, at age 17, Grunewald set the 10K record in 32:59. In 2006, he had set the 5K record in 16:05, which he broke Saturday to set a new record.
Grunewald will be a senior this fall at the University of Minnesota, where he has run cross country the past three years.
He will red shirt this cross country season to focus on taking the Medical College Admissions Test in September. He hopes to attend medical school at the U of M, UCLA or Dartmouth.
He is majoring in biochemistry and physiology with a minor in business.
During a fifth year at the U of M next year, Grunewald said he would focus on running again.
The 26th annual Crosslake Dam Run 10K/5K races are U.S. Track and Field Certified for accurate distances. Both races started and finished at the Town Square in Crosslake.Ê
There were 218 registered runners for both races for an increase of approximately 20 entrants from the previous year.
The 10K male and female winners were Ryan Gjoraas from Plymouth in 36:38 and Christina Roberts of Nisswa in 43:53.
The female 5K winner was Gabriele Anderson of Perham in 17:52. This was a course record time for the women's 5K.
Trophies were awarded to the men and women winners in each race and awards were given to the first three finishers in five-year age groups.
In addition to the post race awards ceremony, numerous prizes were awarded by a drawing after the race, many of which were donated by various Crosslake businesses.
