Citizens concerned about moving County Road 4

Many citizens spoke about their concern over the proposed relocation of County Road 4 during the open forum sessions Monday at the Breezy Point City Council meeting.

Jeff Schoenwetter of JMS Companies was the first person to speak on the issue. As a representative trying to lease or sell the Old Edgewater Inn, Schoenwetter asked the council for help.

Schoenwetter asked the council to help the group of concerned citizens address Crow Wing County to help come up with a better solution for the new placement of the road.

"This way we can achieve everyone's goal and not just the county's," Schoenwetter said.

The proposal that Schoenwetter put before the council was that the city of Breezy Point buy the Edgewater Inn at a reduced cost and tear it down so the proposed County Road 4 could be moved west.

Crow Wing County's plan for relocation moves the road east, which is closer to the lake and closer to many citizens' homes.

Lynn Chilgren, of Breezy Point, lives on County Road 4 and said the new road would be within seven feet of her bedroom window.

"I'm concerned with the speed and the cars being so close," Chilgren said.

Many other citizens who live on County Road 4 spoke in favor of the plan put forward by Schoenwetter.

The council thanked the citizens for their comments, but did not vote on the matter.

In other action Monday, the council:

  • Tabled discussion on the repair of two city roads and the storm water drain utility project.

  • Approved the replacement of an old furnace at the wastewater treatment plant.

  • Approved the purchase of a sprayer for the sewer department to deal with a grubworm problem.

  • Approved the increase of the city's petty cash fund to $200.
