Supporters of high school girls' hockey team to host raffle, carnival to raise funds

Supporters of a Pequot Lakes High School girls' hockey team are seeking the community's help to raise money to form the team this coming school year.

"We have to come up with $20,000 by this fall or there won't be a program," said Pat Ebnet, whose daughter, Kaylene, will be a sophomore on the team.

Ebnet is part of the Red Line Club, formed to raise funds and support the girls' hockey program.

In May, the Pequot Lakes School Board approved an agreement between the school and Red Line Club that states the club will be financially responsible for all program costs, except ice time.

Currently, there are 12-16 girls interested in playing on the team, Ebnet said.

"The more, the merrier. We'd like to get this program up and going," he said.

Any girl interested in playing varsity girls' hockey should contact Todd Eggena of the Red Line Club at (218) 838-5914 or the Breezy Point Ice Arena.

The Red Line Club will have to raise $20,000 each year for the program, Ebnet said. Any money not spent will be kept in the account for the following year.

"We feel we can do this with support of some of the local businesses, in donations, and also through a raffle we are doing," Ebnet said.

The Red Line Club's Summer Saver Raffle includes a $1,000 gas voucher as first prize.

Second and third prizes are $500 grocery vouchers; fourth is a $250 Best Buy gift card; fifth, a $250 Home Depot gift card; sixth, a $250 Target gift card; and seventh, a $250 Wal-Mart gift card.

Tickets are $20 each, and only 750 will be sold. Buy tickets from any PLHS girls' hockey parent or player, at Reed's grocery store in Crosslake, Holiday gas station in Crosslake, Breezy Point Ice Arena, or contact Todd Eggena at (218) 838-5914 or Pat Ebnet at (218) 820-1257.

The drawing will be at 8 p.m. Aug. 30 at Pestello's Bar and Grill in Pequot Lakes.

Winners need not be present to win. People must be 18 or older to buy tickets or win a prize.

The Red Line Club also will host a carnival at the July 3 fireworks in Pequot Lakes.

The event will be at the PLHS football field and will include food and games, including a dunk tank. Anyone interested in being in the dunk tank should contact Eggena or Ebnet or any Red Line Club member.

Food will include smoked turkey drumsticks from Wild Acres, chips and pop. People will buy tickets for carnival games at the food booth.

The Red Line Club is accepting donations for the girls' hockey program.
