Memorial Day services are planned in the following area communities.
Jenkins-Pequot Lakes
The Jenkins VFW Post 3839 and Pequot Lakes American Legion Post 49 will host a service at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, at Pequot Lakes High School.
After the service, participants will march to the Pequot Lakes cemetery for a military ceremony, and then to Sibley Park for a naval ceremony.
Crosslake
The Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion will conduct a service at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake.
Crosslake Lutheran Church will host a community observance of Memorial Day at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 25, at the Outdoor Worship Center on Daggett Pine Road, across from the Crosslake Community Center.
Gen. John. W. Vessey and Chaplain (Maj. Gen.) Norris Einertson will speak.
Vessey has 46 years of military service, which ended in 1985 in his second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. President Reagan appointed him to that post in 1982. He and his wife live in Crow Wing County.
Einertson retired from the Army as a chaplain Aug. 1, 1990, after more than 29 years of active duty service. He and his wife live in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he serves as an interim pastor.
Nisswa
The Nisswa American Legion will host a ceremony at noon Monday, May 26, at the Legion. Speakers include U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., and state Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley. There will be a military fly-by of the 148th Fighter Wing out of Duluth.
Pine River-Timothy Township
The Pine River American Legion will conduct its service at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the Pine River dam. Hank McKinney, retired naval officer, will speak. The service will continue at the Pine River Cemetery. There will be a service at 11:15 a.m. at the Swanburg Cemetery on County Road 1 in Timothy Township. A luncheon will be served at the Legion Post 613.
Backus
The Backus American Legion will start services at 10 a.m. Monday, May 26, at the Backus Cemetery on Highway 371 and at 11 a.m. at Ponto Lake Cemetery (seven miles east of Highway 371 on County Road 87). Retired Army Maj. Gen. George J. Steiner will speak.
Hackensack
The Hackensack American Legion will conduct a service at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at Finley Cemetery.
At 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 26, there will be a parade to Boy River followed by a 10 a.m. service at Hillcrest Cemetery.
