Tigers 10-8 overall after eight game spurt



This last week the Pine River-Backus varsity softball team played eight games in five days - winning four and losing four. After all those games the TigersÕ overall record is 10-8, and their conference record is 6-4.

Tigers split with Nevis 6-7, 10-3

Tigers defeat Mustangs 25-4, 18-2 The Tigers stomped the Northome-Kelliher Mustangs 25-4 and 18-2 in a double header on May 5. Erin Johnson pitched a one-hitter, struck out four, and walked three in the first game. Both teams had four errors, but the Tigers overcame their errors with good fielding and on-fire batting. Jamie Ackerman, Paige Sepin, and Krystle Hamilton each had a double and went 3-4 with two RBIs. Altogether, the Tigers had 15 hits. They also had 22 stolen bases and 16 RBIs. In the second game, the Mustangs were hitting better, but Johnson still struck out four and walked only one. The Tigers had only one error to the MustangsÕ two errors, and 10 hits to the MustangsÕ seven hits. Krystle went 3-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Wildcats defeat Tigers 4-2, 5-2

The Tigers split with Nevis in a conference double header on May 6. They lost the first game 6-7. Johnson was the losing pitcher, but she had seven strikeouts and no walks. Nevis out-hit the Tigers 14-5. Mackenzie and Paige, Krystle, and Michelle Dickson had the hits for the Tigers. In the second game the Tigers got their hitting under control again and defeated Nevis 10-3. Johnson took the win with two strikeouts, two walks, and she gave up only three hits. The Tigers had seven hits including an in-the-park grand slam by Krystle. Both Krystle and Johnson went 2-3, and had 3 RBIs. Also hitting for the Tigers were Ackerman, Nicole Tulenchik, and Emalee Arends.

Tigers 13, Wolves 7

The Tigers defeated the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves in a conference game on May 8. Johnson got the win with nine strikeouts, only one walk, and nine hits. The Tigers had 10 hits including doubles from Paige and Krystle, both of whom went 3-5 along with PaigeÕs sister Mackenzie. The losing pitcher was the WolvesÕ Katie Lee who had only three strikeouts and walked nine batters.

Tigers 7, Huskies 11

On May 9, the Tigers played and lost a very close non-conference game to the Pillager Huskies. The Tigers were ahead 5-1 until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Huskies got six hits and drove in seven runs to take the lead, and the Tigers were unable to come back. Johnson took the loss with five walks and 14 hits. The Tigers had seven hits including doubles from Mackenzie and Krystle. Also hitting for the Tigers were Tahnee Hamilton, Whitney Grimler, Nicole Brekkenstran, who went 2-3 with one RBI, and Dickson.

The Tigers' next game is scheduled for May 16 against Crosby in Pine River. There are also two make-up games, one against Verndale and one against Wadena-Deer Creek, which have not yet been rescheduled.

JV wins two

The junior-varsity softball team defeated the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves 11-9, and the Pillager Huskies 9-4. They played the Wolves on May 8, and their coach, Travis Hoffarth, commented that "It was the best game of the year, and the Tigers showed great composure in keeping the lead even when the Wolves started to come back." Katie Wangberg was the winning pitcher, Emalee Arends got the save, and Katie Rundang hit a two-RBI double.

In their game against the Pillager Huskies, Emalee Arends was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts, one walk and three hits. The Tigers got five hits and were walked seven times. Hitting for the Tigers were Kirsti Taylor, who got on base and home all three of the at-bats that she had, and Arends and Wangberg, who were both 2-3, and Arends also had two RBIs. The Tigers also had 13 stolen bases to aid in their win.
