Volunteers to plant trees and flowers Saturday at Corps of Engineers campground

Youth and adult volunteers will gather at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 16, to plant trees and flowers at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Camp-ground in Crosslake.

The project is the second annual JOIN HANDS DAY national day of service at the campground.

Members from the Central Lakes Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will join youth and adult volunteers from the community for this service activity, said Pat Netko, youth director at Crosslake Lutheran Church and a Thrivent Financial member.

"We are organizing service teams of six to 10 youth with an adult supervisor to plant flowers, dig in more than 250 pine tree seedlings and plant eight 15-foot maple trees," Netko said. "They also will help clean up the grounds."

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is donating the pine tree seedlings. Area garden nurseries are providing the flowers and the corps bought the maples.

This service project is expected to last for about six hours. Crosslake area merchants are donating soft drinks and pizza. Thrivent Financial's Central Lakes Chapter is giving $500 to help fund this JOIN HANDS DAY, said Jerry Kopplin, financial associate in Crosslake.

JOIN HANDS DAY is sponsored by America's fraternal benefit societies and is the only national day of service specifically focused on bringing youth and adults together to form lifelong relationships while improving their communities through neighborhood volunteering.
