The Pequot Lakes Fire Department and DNR responded to a grass fire Thursday, May 7, at a residence off 25th Avenue in Maple Township, west of Pequot Lakes.
A DNR helicopter pilot spotted the fire when returning from a fire farther north, and the homeowner also called the fire department after seeing smoke and trying to extinguish the fire on his own.
The Backus DNR office responded to three grass fires May 7, Brainerd DNR reported two fires and the Washburn Lake in Outing DNR office had one fire that day.
Mark Mortensen, Brainerd DNR fire program forester, said the first fire was reported before 11 a.m. and crews were still out at 6 p.m.
"It was a nice, warm day with bright sunshine, and everything was really dry - just right for any spark to start something," he said, noting the wind and low humidity also fueled the fires.
