The Pine River-Backus varsity softball team won two games in a row to make their overall record 5-4 and their conference record 4-1. They defeated the Pequot Lakes Patriots 20-10 in a non-conference game on April 30.
Erin Johnson was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts. What really aided the Tigers in their win was their batting; they out hit the Patriots 12-9, they had four doubles and two triples, and 14 RBIs. Jamie Ackerman aided the Tigers with a double and a triple going two for four in at-bats and four RBIs. Paige Sepin also had four RBIs and went two for four including a triple. The Tigers scored their 20th run in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game with the 10-run rule. Unfortunately, the Tigers lost their second baseman, Whitney Grimler, due to a sprained ankle in the third inning and are not sure if she will be able to play any more this season.
Tigers 14, Red Lake 3
The Tigers defeated the Red Lake Warriors on May 1, and that game was also won in the fifth inning according to the 10-run rule. Erin Johnson was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts. The three runs scored by Red Lake were because of errors: the Tigers had four errors. Once again the Tigers out hit their competition 9-4 including three in-the-park home runs hit by Paige Sepin, Krystle Hamilton, and Denin Oliver. However, Jamie Ackerman led the team in RBIs, and was the most dependable hitter as she went 3-4.
The Tigers play seven games this week. They were scheduled to play at Northome-Kelliher on May 5, Nevis on May 6, a yet- to-be-announced on May 7, Walker on May 8, and Pillager on May 9.
JV Tigers 5, Pequot Lakes 19
The Tigers' junior-varsity team lost to the Patriots in their second game of the season. The losing pitcher was Emalee Arends. Erin Kish led the Tigers in batting with two RBIs.
