Mayor's Notebook: Be sure to know what words imply

"Gestapo."

Do you really know what that word implies? I do. I have had a family member serve in WWII in Germany, who saw the atrocities committed by the Gestapo.

I had an aunt, born and raised in Germany, who came to the United States after WWII. She lived under that word and told stories of what happened because of this group.

As a young girl, I saw pictures of the suffering imposed by this group.

I take deep offense that anyone in our FREE country would use that awful word and what it implies to describe members of our community. We have many veterans who saw firsthand the camps, the pain and the suffering brought about by this organization. How insensitive, cruel and demeaning it is to use this word to describe anyone who resides or works in our country.

Before we use a word to tear down anything, we should be careful of what that word implies. Those who use it so casually might not have had a family member who lived under that type of government.
