Construction Trades Class Builders

Work began the third week of school, and by the start of the second semester construction was complete.
The project was to build three 8-by-12 foot playhouses, and the builders were the 13 students of Todd Hillukka's PR-B High School Construction Trades class.
"I was glad that there was plenty of time to finish the project," admits Hillukka. "I didn't have to push too hard."
The first-year teacher indicated building a full-size home would have meant a lot of scheduling pressure. Instead the two-hour, all year class had time to work on other projects, such as picnic tables and benches for the school forest, as well as odds and ends for other teachers and classrooms.
The 2-by-4 constructed playhouses are solidly built, each with four windows and an asphalt shingle roof. Open on the inside, the buildings could also be used for storage.
Students in the classes needed to have already completed Woods 1 where they learned how to use the building tools and equipment needed for the job.
Student builder Eric Torkelson enjoyed working outside on the playhouses rather than being stuck in a classroom.
Hillukka agreed saying he looked forward to working in the open air.
The school plans to offer the playhouses at auction, said PR-B Business Manager Stacy Colebrook-Robjent. The hope is to generate enough money to cover the $3,600 cost of construction, she explained.
