Rain doesn't dampen spirits of Relay for Life participants

Mother Nature failed once again to dampen the spirits of those participating in an outdoor event last week.

Nearly 400 Pequot Lakes High School students spent all day last Friday, May 2, walking around the track in steady rain for Relay for Life.

They raised about $14,000 for the American Cancer Society in the process.

Students' spirits appeared high as they set up tents on the football field and stashed them with pop and snacks to get them through the day.

Music flooded the track from a PA system, and students could win prizes by correctly answering trivia questions that related to cancer.

The high school's Interact Club organizes the Relay for Life every two years, and this was the school's fifth relay.

This year, 42 student teams and one team of teachers supported the cause, said Olivia Faacks, Interact Club president and Relay for Life co-chair with fellow student Cam Hallan, Interact Club vice president.

Interact advisers are Nikki Stark and Tracy Anick.

Relay teams could have up to 10 members, and two members had to be walking on the track at all times during the Relay for Life, which ran 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Each team member had to raise at least $25.

Area cancer survivors also participated in the event. Taking the first lap around the track were survivors JoAnn Baushek, Alison Collins, Brady Derksen, Vicki Finnie, Randi Kuschke, John Marchwick, Bambi and Cole O'Hern, Claire Steen, Dave and Kathy Trees and Brian and Vonnie Tweed.

At the end of their lap, they released purple balloons.
