Tigers host Mid-Minn Conference golf meet

The Pine River-Backus boy's golf team hosted the first Mid-Minn Conference meet of the season on April 22.

The Tigers finished fourth with a score of 258 while Pequot Lakes cruised to the team title with a score of 211. Crosby-Ironton took second place with a 225 and Nevis was third with a 247.

Ben Kline and Brady Korwin both carded 49s to lead PR-B. Greg Nagel finished with a round of 51, Cody Mager shot a 54, Aaron Richards shot a 55 and Adam Barstow had a 60.

The Patriots' Jonas Dale, Drake Beyer and Michael Eck shared medalist honors by shooting 40s.

"Young and inexperienced defines the team this year," said PR-B coach Mark Gonnion. "Most of the guys on this team have little or no varsity experience.

"I don't like playing kids on varsity until they are ready for the pressure," Gonnion continued, "but we need for some of the younger kids to step up to the challenge. Cody Mager is just a seventh grader but he does play a lot of golf and did well Tuesday.

"The meet this week was the first one that we have been able to get in. We need a heat wave to dry things out. We are supposed to play in our second conference meet at the Legacy course on Monday but that's not likely to happen. Hopefully things will dry out enough to be able to play at Deacons Lodge on Wednesday."

After one meet, Pequot Lakes leads the conference with 30 points. The Tigers are currently fourth with eight points. On April 28 PR-B was scheduled to play in the Mid-Minn Conference meet hosted by Pequot Lakes at the Legacy before playing at Deacon's Lodge on April 30.
