PR-B softball team loses two, wins two

The Pine River-Backus varsity softball team recently fell 10-4 to the Blackduck Drakes. They were tied 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning, but the Tigers gave up seven runs when the Drakes came to bat in the bottom of the fourth. The Tigers had five errors to the Drakes two errors during the April 21 game. Krystle Hamilton was the losing pitcher with two strikeouts and six walks. The Tigers had only one hit, a double, and all of their runs came from walks and errors. Denin Oliver had the hit for the Tigers. The umpires called the game in the fifth inning because of the weather.

Tigers 13, W-H-A Wolves 15

The Tigers had a close loss to the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves on April 22. The Wolves came out in the first inning with two runs to the Tigers' one run, and at the top of the third the score was 3-2 in favor of the Wolves. The Wolves scored three runs in the top of the third, but the Tigers took over the lead by scoring six runs in the bottom of the third inning. In the fourth inning Erin Johnson replaced Krystle Hamilton as pitcher, and the Tigers kept the Wolves from scoring in the fourth. Meanwhile, the Tigers scored another two runs to make the score 10-6. Unfortunately, the Tigers then gave up three runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth allowing the Wolves to take the lead. Johnson took the loss with five strikeouts and seven walks. Jamie Ackerman, Whitney Grimler, and Johnson each had a double to help the Tigers. Johnson also had three RBIs off her double. The Tigers had eight errors to the Wolves' six errors, and nine hits to the Wolves 11 hits.

Tigers sweep double header

The Tigers defeated the Cass Lake Panthers twice on April 24 with scores of 14-3 and 15-0. Krystle Hamilton pitched the first game of the double-header, and came away with two strikeouts and a walk. The Tigers had five errors to the Panthers' four errors. Mackenzie and Paige Sepin and Krystle Hamilton each had a triple, and Mackenzie also had an in-the-park home run to aid the Tigers in their win. The Panthers didn't have any hits while the Tigers had nine hits total and 11 RBIs.

For the second game, Erin Johnson got the win with six strikeouts and no walks. The Tigers had three errors to the Panthers' four errors, but even with the errors, the Tigers' defense kept the Panthers from scoring. The Tigers only had three hits including a double by Krystle Hamilton, but they also got walked 14 times.

The Tigers were supposed to play Verndale on April 25, but that game was cancelled due to weather. They were scheduled to play three games this week; Wadena on April 28, Laporte on April 29, and Red Lake on Thursday, May 1.

JV Tigers 23, W-H-A Wolves 22

The junior varsity won their first game of the season at home against the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves on April 22. It was a very close game with the deciding run not coming until the bottom of the seventh inning. Katie Wangberg was the winning pitcher with seven strikeouts.
