Patriots trounce W-H-A, lose 5-2 to Park Rapids in Metrodome

Pequot Lakes Baseball Team
The Pequot Lakes Patriots' baseball is off to a 1-2 start on the season after finally kicking off the schedule.

The Patriots were blanked 10-0 at Milaca on April 15 as they garnered just four hits off of Milaca pitching. Jake Serfling was 2-for-3, Tyler Wittwer a double and pitcher Ben Kepner had the other hit.

Kepner went all the way on the mound for the Patriots to take the loss, allowing six earned runs to go along with two strikeouts and three walks.

Coach Kyle Spray said, "It was the first time out for us, while they had played two other games and it showed. We didn't hit well and made three errors, while they only had one.

Patriots pound W-H-A 15-4

On Friday, the Patriots' bats were booming as they pounded out 12 hits off three Walker-Hackensack-Akeley pitchers in a non-conference win.

Ryan Pahl pitched a complete five-inning game to get the win, allowing just five hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts.

The Wolves bunched three hits in the first to score twice and added single runs in the second and third.

The Patriots came back in their half of the first on singles by Brandon Hilts and Ben Kepner and a two-run single by Tyler Wittwer.

The Patriots took the lead for good with three runs in the second on a walk to Chase Mason, an RBI double to deep center, a sacrifice bunt by Jake Serfling, a single by Hilts, a walk to Kepner and a double by Wittwer.

A walk, a hit batter, another walk and Hilts' third hit of the game pushed across three more Patriots' runs in the third for an 8-4 lead.

Seven more runs crossed the plate in the fourth on three walks, along with five hits; one of those a two-run double by Serfling and Wittwer's third hit of the game.

"We really hit the ball tonight, only had one error and Ryan (Pahl) really pitched a nice game after being a little shaky at the start," said Coach Spray.

Hilts was 3-for-3, Wittwer was 3-for-4 with a double and Wicker and Kepner were 2-for-3.

JV Patriots also whip Wolves

The junior varsity Patriots also whipped the Wolves 16-4 on Friday.

Pitcher Nate Lehman was the winning pitcher and struggled a little at the start as the Wolves got four runs in the top of the first, but he shut them down after that.

The Patriots took the lead with eight runs with the big blow being a three-run triple to centerfield by Andrew Kostecka.

In that same frame, Jake Braam laid down a perfect suicide bunt, which he beat out for a hit, to drive in a run with the bases loaded.

Dominique McCallister and Jordan Severance each had two hits.

Coach Jerry Braam said, "After a slow start, Nate pitched well and the guys did a nice job running the bases."

Patriots downed in the dome

The Patriots lost 5-2 to Pelican Rapids Saturday in the Metrodome following the Twins' game.

Tyler Wicker went the first five innings allowing just two hits, walking five, hitting one and striking out two. Levi Christianson went the last two allowing one hit.

The Vikings got a single run in the first and a three-run double in the third when they scored four times. The Patriots had five hits and made only one error and scored single runs in the second and fifth.

"They (the Vikings) got a big hit when they needed it and although we outhit them we couldn't come up with a big hit," said Coach Spray. "We left the bases loaded once and stranded a guy at third two other times.

"We played well and the guys saw a good Twins game and had a great time playing in the Dome," he added.

The Patriots are scheduled to play at Pine River-Backus on Friday.
