Ladies in Pine River have a new spot to shop for clothing, shoes and accessories: Sassy.
Melissa (Shamp) VanHeerden, owner of Shamp's Meat Market, opened Sassy on Barclay Avenue to provide modern plus-sized clothing for women.
Her main emphasis is on sizes 14 and up - but in addition to the plus-size line, she also carries sizes 8 to 6X, juniors plus size and maternity.
Sassy, located in the former Artisan's Corner building, 400 Barclay Ave., is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
VanHeerden said she was frustrated having to drive out of the area to reach designated plus-size women's clothing stores.
And, given that many women in this country are size 14 or larger, there should be a market locally.
Melissa picked inventory for the store including slacks, blouses, T-shirts, shorts and jeans, hats, handbags, flip-flops, shoes and accessories.
She also anticipates adding handmade jewelry and nail polish for sale. Usana nutritional products are also available at the store.
"I've tried to keep it really reasonable," she said of Sassy prices. Nearly every item in the store sells for less than $50.
VanHeerden also set aside a kids' area in the store complete with an Xbox and coloring books to keep children entertained while mom shops.
