Patriot junior varsity girls post outstanding 19-4 record



Coach Brian Kazmierczak's Pequot Lakes Patriots' junior varsity girls' basketball team recently completed an outstanding season with a 19-4 record.

The girls were 10-1 on the road and 9-3 at home and were 8-2 against Mid-State Conference foes.

Against the Staples-Motley Cardinals they won twice by scores of 40-28 and 39-33; they beat the Park Rapids Panthers 60-13 and 56-21 and also beat the Crosby-Ironton Rangers twice; winning here by 59-41 and at C-I beat the Rangers 42-41 on a long 3-pointer by Mattie Lueck at the final buzzer.

In the game here with the Detroit Lakes Lakers, they lost 48-44, but there they avenged that loss by a 40-39 score behind 10 points by Lueck.

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines beat the Patriots here by a 41-34 score despite 10 points by Sarah Thomas, but at Wadena they got sweet revenge with a 39-26 win with Lueck leading the way with 12 points.

The Patriots won 12 of their last 14 games with their only losses being to the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thunder by 46-33 and the Bemidji Lumberjacks by 46-32.

Sarah Thomas led the Patriots in scoring with 151 points with a game-high of 16. She also led the team with steals with 101 and assists with 52 and grabbed 55 rebounds.

Kylie Beltz led the team with 78 rebounds, scored 133 points with a game-high 15 and had 50 steals.

Kayla Wangen was second in scoring with 143 with a game-high of 16 and she had 69 rebounds and 38 steals.

Mattie Lueck scored 126 points with a high of 15 and had 36 steals, 35 assists and 12 blocks.

Kaitlyn Schmidt scored 105 points with a high of 11 and she had 59 rebounds, 50 steals and 36 assists.

As a team the Patriots outscored their opponents by scoring 1070 points to 779 and scored 637 in the first half to their foes' 460.

They outrebounded the other team by 616 to 466 and as a team had 248 to only 92.

Amy Larson, who scored 78 points, also had 58 rebounds and Kirsten Noska scored 96 points, had 40 rebounds and 36 steals.
