The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew was defeated by Moorhead 39-26 and Detroit Lakes 33-16 and edged by Crosby-Ironton 34-33 on the fifth tie-breaker criteria at the Detroit Lakes tournament on Saturday, Jan. 30.
Dassell-Cokato, which is ranked No. 9 in Class AA, defeated Fergus Falls 33-28 to win the championship while Little Falls topped Moorhead 42-27 for third place.
Four Road Crew wrestlers won all three matches - Darian Rubner (135 pounds), Peter Harrison (140), Levi Allen (145), and Derek Sonenstahl (152).
Chris Harrison, who faced three state-ranked wrestlers, defeated two of his opponents, but lost to senior David Booth.
"Chris was really focused at Detroit Lakes and did a very good job," Coach Tom Demars said of Harrison.
Against Moorhead, Rubner earned a 6-5 decision. Peter Harrison then won by fall at 3:15. Allen won 11-3 and Sonenstahl followed with an 11-6 decision. Against a state-ranked wrestler, Chris Harrison earned a 12-4 decision.
Against Detroit Lakes, Rubner won 6-5, Peter Harrison won 2-1 and Allen earned a 10-0 victory. Sonenstahl earned a 9-3 decision while Chris Harrison followed with a 7-6 win. Both teams then forfeited at the 215 and 285 weight classes.
Against Crosby-Ironton, the Road Crew's Anthony Philipson (103), won by forfeit and teammate Brandon Mager lost 6-0. Both Kyle Jordan and Rubner won by forfeit and Peter Harrison won with a pin in 24 seconds. Allen won 10-0, but Chris Harrison lost 5-1. C-I won the next three matches by forfeit.
The Road Crew competes at New York Mills on Thursday, Feb. 4, and participates in the conference meet at Parkers Prairie on Saturday, Feb. 6.
