Backus Legion units meet membership goals
The Backus American Legion was cited for meeting its membership goal at its January post meeting.
The Department of Minnesota, in a congratulatory note to the unit, said, "We appreciate the hard work and dedication that this takes and would like to let you and your membership team know how much we value your service to your post and the American Legion as a whole. With your help, the American Legion will continue to be a strong voice for veterans." The post also received a $75 cash award from the department for meeting that goal by last Dec 5.
Membership stands at 123. The post has met its membership goal several times since rechartering in 1986, despite the passing of many World War II and Korean veterans which has resulted in a decline of Legion membership in many posts throughout the state. The Backus all-time high was 143 members in 1988.
Post Auxiliary Membership Chair Joyce Smith also reported that the Auxiliary exceeded its goal for the third year in a row with 89 members, which is also an all-time high.
