A new after school program, HELPS, is available for students in grades nine through 12.
HELPS is an acronym for Homework, Education, Leadership, Participation and Service. The HELPS program is free. The first session will be Monday, Feb. 8, from 3:30 to 5:15 p.m. in the Pequot Lakes High School media center.
HELPS will meet every week for the remainder of the school year. Jessica Gravdahl, an AmeriCorps Promise Fellow, will lead the HELPS program.
Participants are encouraged to sign up before Feb. 8. The registration form is available in the Pequot Lakes High School office. Parents are asked to give their permission for their child to attend the HELPS program.
Students are encouraged to commit to being a part of the program for the remainder of the quarter or semester. There will be a snack at each HELPS session. HELPS is not a drop-in or one-time service.
In addition to giving help with completion of homework assignments, the HELPS program will include time for students to better understand their relationships with others and to plan and implement a service project for the school or community.
For more information, contact Gravdahl at (218) 824-1071 or jgravdahl@umn.edu.
The HELPS program is offered in conjunction with Pequot Lakes Community Education.
