Softball: Tigers finish second in section
Emma Mills had the only extra base hit for the Pine River-Backus Tigers as they ended their season with a 6-7 loss to the Sebeka Trojans Friday, June 1 to finish in second place in section 5A.
Lindsey Tulenchik went 1-3 with three RBIs, and Sydney Davidson went 1-4 with two RBIs.
"It was an outstanding season,"coach John Riewer said. "Unfortunately we came up short of our goal of reaching the state tournament. We had plenty of chances and opportunities, but the ball just didn't bounce our way."
The Tigers were in the lead 6-2 when Sebeka managed to tack on three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to narrow the Tigers' lead to 6-5, and the Tigers were unable to answer for the win as Sebeka scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Jada Olivier pitched six innings, struck out five batters, walked three and gave up seven hits.
The Tigers had five errors to Sebeka's three.
Riewer finished his comment with a reflection on this season's accomplishments and looking forward to next year.
"18-4 overall record, conference champions, subsection and section runner up; we graduate four seniors but return a nice nucleus of players next year, so there will be a lot of competition for playing time, which makes it exciting," he said.
