Girls Hockey: Lightning top Lakers, improve to 2-2
The Northern Lakes Lightning girls hockey team brought its record back to .500 with a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Lakes Lakers on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
The Lightning kicked off the scoring in the game when Lou Koslowski found the goal 1:07 into the first period off assists by Elli Saxerud and Hayden Boelter.
Nearly 28 minutes of play went by before the score changed, but the Lakers finally answered late in the second period to tie the game at 1-1. However, Lightning defender Savannah Abear found the back of the net roughly three minutes later off an assist by Mackenzie Rickard.
An interference call on the Lightning gave the Lakers a one-skater advantage, and they would capitalize on that advantage in the opening minute of the third period to tie the game back up.
The Lightning found themselves on a power play five minutes later, and Boelter managed to score in that time with assists coming from Chelsea Skluzacek and Michala Stangel. The Lighting had more opportunities in the final minutes when the Lakers pulled their goalie, but the team played until the final buzzer with that one-goal lead.
Goalie Maddie Wahoske recorded 28 saves in the game.
"I think we are doing well and making good strides," coach Breanna Sheley said. "Obviosusly the win against Detroit Lakes was great, since they are in our conference. Our goalie is looking a lot better - it's good to see her improving every day. We are learning a lot about ourselves and the things we need to work on."
