Girls hockey: Lightning win one of two

In two games over the past week, the Northern Lakes Lightning girls hockey team ended with mixed results.

On Thursday, Nov. 16, the Lightning picked up their first victory of the season in a 4-1 win over Park Rapids.

They followed that up two days later with a 10-1 defeat against the Holy Family Catholic/Waconia Wild Fire.

Against the Panthers, the Lightning jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with Alexa Holm scoring a goal midway through the period, with an assist by Elli Saxerud, and Sydney Tietz picking up a power play goal 88 seconds later coming off an assist by goalie Maddie Wahoske.

Savannah Abear scored in the second period for the Lightning, with an assist by Boelter.

The Panthers were on the board in the second period, but a third-period goal by Caitlyn Gutzman, with an assist by Sydney Tietz, sealed the win for the Lightning.

Wahoske stopped 16 of the 17 shots she faced.

In Saturday's game, the Lightning defense kept the Wild Fire in check for the first nearly 10 minutes of the game, but their opponents rattled off three goals in the span of four minutes after that. In the second period, they picked up three more.

Gutzman got the Lightning on the board in the opening seconds of the third period on a power play goal, with assists coming from Alyssa Koslowski and Boelter, but the Wild Fire scored four more unanswered goals in the remaining minutes of the game.

Wahoske recorded 23 saves in the game.
