Football: Patriots beat Mora, advance to state semis
Nathan Traut picked up two touchdowns as a solid rushing attack and stifling defense gave the Pequot Lakes Patriot football team a 34-0 victory over Mora in the state quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 11.
"We played really good defensively," senior fullback Calvin Maske said. "We got our offense rolling eventually, but overall I think we were pretty good."
After the teams exchanged scoreless drives, the Patriots got on the board in the final minute of the first quarter on a 23-yard rushing touchdown by Nathan Traut.
The Patriots would again exchange possession with the Mustangs until quarterback Blake Lane managed to rush in from four yards out to give the Patriots a 14-0 lead, which they would carry into halftime.
"In the first half, we would drive down to their red zone but couldn't score - we'd have turnovers or penalties or things like that - but we finally got things going and the guys settled down a little bit and played our football," Coach Chip Lohmiller said.
Traut found the endzone once more early in the third quarter, this time from three yards out. Maske hurdled a defender at the goal line in the fourth quarter for a score, and Devan Psyck scored from one yard out late in the fourth quarter to seal a Patriot victory.
The Patriots will now play in the state semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at USBank Stadium against St. Croix Lutheran Academy.
"It's a very good feeling," senior Maxx Schindel said. "This was our goal all along, and we're heading right toward it."
"It's just exciting for the kids," Lohmiller said. "They have worked so hard for so long - for so many years. This was their goal, and I'm just so proud of them. They deserve it."
