On Friday, Oct. 6, the Pequot Lakes Patriots football team picked up a homecoming night victory in a 55-8 win over Park Rapids, raising its overall record to 4-2 on the season.

The Patriots struck early and often in cruising past the winless Panthers.

"I saw a lot of great team chemistry," senior wide receiver Austin Young said. "Everyone is starting to work together ... We came in prepared. We've always known Park Rapids will hit us hard, but we were ready and we blew them out of the park."

Young began the scoring attack with 7:51 left in the first quarter, when quarterback Blake Lane found him down the left sideline. From there, Young raced in for the team's first touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

After a Park Rapids turnover on downs and an exchange of punts, Lane found Young again for a first down at the Park Rapids 22-yard line on the last play of the first quarter. Lane then ran the ball to the 13-yard line, but a 15-yard penalty sent the team back. The team then got the ball to the 6-yard line but were unable to convert on a 4th-and-2 play.

The Patriot defense forced a Panther punt on the ensuing drive, which Young returned all the way to the Park Rapids 16-yard line.

From there, Calvin Maske ran it to the 9-yard line before running it in for the touchdown on the next play. Lane then ran in the two-point conversion to give the Patriots a 14-0 lead.

The Patriots would score again with 4:52 left in the half when quarterback Cale Wolf passed to Young for a 24-yard score and 21-0 lead.

The Panthers then fumbled the kickoff, with the Patriots recovering at their own 48-yard line. On the ensuing drive, Lane found Nathan Traut for a 41-yard reception, bringing the ball to the 7-yard line. From there, Lane ran it in for the touchdown, and a successful Chase Larson extra point gave the team a 28-0 lead.

Pequot Lakes would get one more touchdown before the break as Lane passed to Maxx Schindel for the 12-yard score with 39.6 seconds left to give the Patriots a 35-point lead at halftime.

The Panthers recovered a Traut fumble early in the second half and would move in for the score with 9:14 left in the third quarter. A successful two-point conversion cut the Pequot lead to 35-8.

Late in the third quarter, Pequot's Dylin Ackerman intercepted a Panther pass. After first down runs by Traut, Lane and Maske, Traut would run down the left sideline for a 20-yard touchdown and a 42-8 lead.

The next score came on a three-yard run from Lane for the 49-8 lead.

With 3:01 left in the game, Bode Magnuson ran it in from 41 yards out. The Patriots took a knee on the point-after attempt, giving the Patriots a 55-8 victory.

"We played pretty well," coach Chip Lohmiller said. "We had a fumble recovery by Tim Ryan to go along with our three interceptions and held them to just 177 yards."

The Patriots rushed the ball 42 times for 277 yards, with Traut getting 116 of those yards on 16 carries.
