Football: Tigers fall to Warroad
The Pine River-Backus Tiger football team fought through injuries, but fell to the Warroad Warriors on Friday, Sept. 8, by a score of 34-13.
"I saw a gutsy effort by a kind of undermanned team today," coach Tom Demars said. "I'm really proud of the way they stepped up to the challenge. They played their hearts out the whole game, in spite of our position. We finished the game with 12 guys who could play."
Austin Rateike ran for both Tiger touchdowns in a Pine River-Backus 34-13 loss to the Warroad Warriors Friday in a Northwest Subdistrict East game.
Rateike scored on runs of 39 and 74 yards, the second of which put the Tigers up 13-7 with eight seconds left in the opening quarter, but sat out the second half with an injury. He finished with 120 yards on five carries.
Norman Toetu rushed 14 times for 71 yards.
The Tigers got the better of their opponent in passing situations, with quarterback Brandon Wolske completing seven passes for 61 yards.
"We put ourselves in position to make a number of plays, but we missed some opportunities," Demars said. "We played very well, I thought, but we dropped some balls and had some breakdowns defensively. We just have to say sharp mentally and make the plays we have the chance."
