Football: Late field goal topples Patriots
The Pequot Lakes football saw a repeat of last year's matchup with Fergus Falls, as the Otters again won a close matchup - 23-21 over the Patriots in a Midwest Red Subdistrict game on Friday, Sept. 8.
The Otters first touchdown came with 5:31 left in the opening quarter on a 91-yard passing play and a successful extra point. They connected on another touchdown pass in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead.
The Patriots responded with an 85-yard kick return by Nathan Traut, who was finally tackled at the 2-yard line. Deven Psyck ran it in from there and Chase Larson connected on the extra point to cut the deficit in half with 8:31 left in the first half.
The Otters responded with another passing touchdown to give Fergus falls a 20-7 lead with five minutes left in the half.
Early in the third quarter, the Patriots forced a punt and returned the ball to their own 28-yard line. Two runs by Traut brought it to the 41 and quarterback Blake Lane ran it for a first down at the Fergus Falls 40-yard line. On the next play, Calvin Maske ran it the remaining 40 yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 20-13.
After an exchange of punts, Lane connected with receiver Austin Young for 31 yards and Traut ran for a first down to bring the ball to the Otter's 22-yard line.
Shortly after a sack and holding penalty stalled their momentum, the Patriots fumbled the ball away on the 5-yard line for their third turnover of the night.
After forcing a punt, the Patriots saw law Lane connect with Young to bring the ball to the 28, and Traut ran it to the 3.
Pequot Lakes took a one-point lead with 2:30 left in the game on a Maske touchdown run and two-point conversion pass from Lane to Psyck.
On the ensuing drive, the Otters were able to run the clock down, and converted on fourth down, as the got kicker Noah Raitz in range and he connected on a 41-yard field goal as time expired.
"We had too many fumbles and mistakes in the game," coach Chip Lohmiller said. "We did play pretty will defensively, especially in the second half."
Calvin Maske and Colton Anderson each had seven tackles for Pequot Lakes while Maxx Schindel had three tackles and four assists and Tim Ryan had four tackles and two assists.
The Patriots, 1-1 overall, are scheduled to host subdistrict rival Perham at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.
