Lane named MVP for Patriot girls
The Pequot Lakes Patriots girls basketball team, which finished the 2016-17 season with a 20-8 record, hosted its annual year-end banquet on Monday, April 3, where sophomore forward and leading scorer Olivia Lane was named the team's most valuable player.
Head coach Jon Dale began the event by thanking his coaching staff - middle-level coaches Chad Rudbeck and Brett Dale and JV coach Kate Dale - along with district activities director Marc Helmrichs.
"All our teams did well," Dale said. "The C team was 18-0, the JV team was 20-6 and the varsity team was 20-8."
Dale then handed out letters and participation certificates to players.
Echo Journal Athletes of the Week during the season were Sam Littman, Corina Ruud, Karli Skog and Lane. Lane was also named a Brainerd Dispatch Player of the Week.
Both Lane and Ruud were named to the Dispatch All-Area team, while Skog and Littman received honorable mentions.
Dale also presented letters to team managers Mirjana Ganley and Tori Popehn.
Littman was the sole Patriot named to the academic all-state team.
Members of the Mid-State all-conference team were Ruud and Lane, with Skog and Littman earning honorable mentions.
For team-specific awards, Littman was named the team's best defensive player. Kristin Skog was named most improved player.
Team MVP Lane ended her sophomore season with 1,055 career points, averaging nearly 20 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. She broke Haley Wiebolt's single-game record of 42 points by scoring 44 points in a game.
