Tiger boys fall to Verndale
Brady Raph led the way with 15 points and the Pine River-Backus Tigers boys basketball team fell to Verndale 68-40 in the regular season finale Friday, March 3.
We played a very good first half," coach John Riewer said. "Unfortunately, in the second half we couldn't put the ball in the basket. I liked our effort, but against a good defensive team like Verndale ... We can't allow turnovers to lead to easy transition baskets, and that is what happened in the second half. When we allow ourselves to play half-court defense, we are a good team playing against teams of our caliber."
Nick Ackerman recorded seven points for a Pine River-Backus team that committed 22 turnovers despite pulling down 31 rebounds and blocking 11 shots.
The Tigers finish the regular season with an 11-15 record. As the No. 7 seed, they will face the No. 2 McGregor Mercury in the opening round of the Section 5A playoffs Thursday, March 9.
