VIRGINIA - Sydney Holt and Haley Wiebolt from Pequot Lakes will be making the trek to the Class 1A state doubles tournament after finishing second in the Section 7-1A tournament Tuesday.

Aitkin's Claire Browning just missed qualifying with a third-place finish in singles.

Holt-Wiebolt opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Aitkin's Bethany Kinzer-Lydia Browning in the quarterfinals and defeated Virginia's McKenzie Phelps-Anna Seitz in the semis to get to the finals.

In their third and final match of the day, Holt-Wiebolt were defeated 6-1, 6-4 by Eveleth-Gilbert's Cora Delic-Audry Delich for the title.

"In their first match against Aitkin, they played really well and were glad that it was a competitive match because they hadn't had a chance to play a lot of doubles this year," said Pequot coach Monica Sergent.

The two seniors played most of the year at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but had decided at the end of last season that they wanted to play doubles at tournament time this year.

"They felt confident going into the semifinals," said Sergent, "and played strong with good doubles strategy. A key to their success is how well they communicate on the court and that carried them through the day.

"They knew the championship match would be their toughest, but they've had a lot of experience playing in pressure situations and they were already excited about having clinched a spot for state."

Sergent went on to say that say that while the girls had a few lapses in the title match, they also had some great volleys and shot placement.

"This is special for both girls," said Sergent, "because Haley will now have made it to state in all three of her sports including basketball and softball while tennis is Sydney's only sport so this was her last chance."

The last state tournament appearance by a Pequot Lakes player was in 2008 when Kirstie Harmdierks and Cori Lundmark qualified in doubles as juniors.

In the singles tournament, Pequot's Mallory Goerges lost 6-1, 6-0 to Aitkin's Claire Browning in the quarterfinals. Browning then lost 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to Pine City's Natalie Cahill in the semis before coming back to take third with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Aelea Ginette from Duluth Marshall.
