Patriots' JV, C-teams compile winning records

Both the Pequot Lakes' junior varsity and C-team finished successful boys' basketball seasons. The Patriots' JV squad was 22-3 overall while the C-team was 19-3.

Against Staples-Motley on Feb. 20, the JV team built a 26-17 halftime lead on way to a 61-27 win. Nathan Traut paced the Patriots with 16 points while Cody Huss added 13, Anthony Popehn 12, Andy Voges seven, Zach Sjoblad five, and Kirk Johnson and Austin Young four each.

On Feb. 21, the Patriots' season ended with a 70-58 victory over Minnewaska Area. A total of 10 players scored for Pequot Lakes, which assumed a 39-20 lead at the half. Huss led the Patriots with 19 points, followed by Sjoblad with nine, Traut and Hunter Clement eight each, Young seven, Michael Plumer six, Voges and Johnson four each, and Popehn two.

"The boys had a great season, and really played well while losing just three games," said Pequot Lakes' JV coach Alex Kunesh.

The C-team led the Brainerd Warrior B team 28-15 at the half on way to a 52-31 win. Tyler Manley and Zach Senst each had 10 points for the Patriots while Blake Lane and Adam Casanova had nine each, Chase Larson six, and Sam Scheuss and Jack White four apiece.

"We had balanced scoring against Brainerd," said C-team coach Bret Sergent.

Against Staples-Motley, the Patriots led 28-16 at the half and won 61-28. Lane led the way with 11 points while Scheuss and Manley each had nine, Casanova eight, Larson seven, White and Senst six each, Devon Psyck three and Kade Kitzman two.

At Minnewaska Area, the Patriots led 19-16 at the break on way to a 59-33 win. Larson had a team-high 12 points, White added 10, Casanova and Scheuss nine each, Manley eight, and Senst and Psyck five.

Patriot eighth-grade boys 20-0

The Pequot Lakes eighth-grade boys' basketball team finished its season with a 20-0 record after defeating Aitkin 49-12 on Thursday, Feb. 26.

Top scorer for the Patriots was Tyler Manley with 12 points while Marcus Klein had eight, Sean Ryan six, Austin Meister, Owen Seidl and Jordan Schommer four each, Alex Trees, Sam Pfeiffer, Joe Keiffer, Vincent Miska and Dylin Ackerman two, and Aaron Washburn one.

On Tuesday, Feb. 24, Pequot Lakes defeated the host Pierz Pioneers 68-23. Klein led the way with 13 points, Schommer added 12, Meister and Washburn eight, Seidl, Trees, Pfeiffer, Miska, Sean Ryan and Ackerman each with four and Manley with three.

PL seventh-grade boys finish 12-7

The Pequot Lakes seventh-grade boys' basketball team defeated Aitkin 53-42 on Feb. 26, in its final regular season game to finish with a 12-7 record.

The Patriots trailed by three points at the half. When the second half started Pequot Lakes went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. Pequot Lakes maintained the lead for the rest of the game.

The Patriots' leading scorers were Carter Embree with 16 points followed by Jacob Faacks with 13.

Against Pierz on Feb. 24, Pequot Lakes was defeated by the Pioneers 32-39. The Patriots started off leading by six, but Pierz had an eight-point run to take the lead. The Patriots did lead 18-16 at the half. Early in the second half, Pierz took off and had a nine-point lead and went on to win. The Patriots leading scorers were Embree with 16 points and Grant Kotaska with eight.

On Feb. 20, Pequot Lakes defeated Staples-Motley 44-24. After the first half the Patriots were up 17-9. In the second half, the Cardinals added 15 points but the Patriots won. Pequot Lakes' top scorers were Embree with 12 points, Jacob Faacks eight, Dylan Collins seven, Daltin Ackerman six, Zach Jorgens and Alex Korf four each, Logun Schelander two, and Will Middleton one.
