CIA volleyball squad wins Borealis Conference
The Cook Inlet Academy volleyball team defended its Borealis Conference title Friday at Lumen Christi in Anchorage.
The Eagles cruised to the title, topping Birchwood in three games in the semifinals and then sweeping Ninilchik in three games in the championship. Ninilchik did not make it to state, losing in the second-place game Saturday to Lumen Christi in a tense five-setter.
“I was really pleased,” CIA coach Lindsay Keener said. “They all played really well. It was definitely a team effort.
“Some teams rely on a couple players, but we had a bunch of people come together.”
Kelsie Leaf earned first-team all-conference honors and MVP honors. Cara Davidson also was named to the first team. Megan Bauder and Nicole Moffis landed on the second team.
The Eagles also loaded up the all-academic team, with Leaf, Davidson, Bauder, Chloe Nelson, Angie Uchtman and Erica McMahan getting nods.
Last year when the Eagles won the conference, it was their first trip to state and the squad finished fifth.
“We hope to do a little better than last year,” Keener said. “Last year, they were kind of nervous because it was all new to them. This year, the girls should not be as nervous.”
