Hakkinen takes 18th at World Cup opener
Kasilof biathlete Jay Hakkinen took 18th place in the opening competition of the 2011-12 World Cup Biathlon championships in Sweden on Wednesday.
Hakkinen competed in a 20-kilometer race and shooting event, compiling a result of 57:02.4.
“This race showed there is really good potential for this season, so now I can be quite ambitious about my goals,” he said in a written statement. “Plus, it is always fun to be scoring World Cup points.”
Martin Fourcade of France topped runner-up Michal Slesingr of the Czech Republic by 1:54.3. Both men had a single penalty today. Third place went to Germany’s Simon Schempp, with one penalty, 1:54.5 back.
Hakkinen is 3:32.6 off the pace.
