Quick look at 3 weekend football playoff matchups

2011 prep football playoffs

Kenai Central at Soldotna, 3 p.m. Saturday

In a rematch of the Northern Lights Conference regular-season finale, SoHi looks to win its 20th straight on the heels of a 50-20 victory over its rival.

The Stars (8-0 overall, 5-0 conference) are the NLC No. 1 seed, while the Kardinals (4-4, 3-2) are No. 3. The winner gets either Homer or Thunder Mountain in the medium-schools state championship, which will be played Oct. 15 at Chugiak High School.

The Stars and Kards combined to the win the last nine small-schools state titles before both were placed in the newly created medium-schools division.

Homer at Thunder Mountain, 6 p.m Friday

The Mariners dismantled the Southeast Conference champions 84-20 early this season, but Homer coach Camron Wyatt expects a bigger challenge this time.

Homer (7-1, 4-1), the NLC No. 2 seed, would break the school's single-season win mark with a victory. The team's lone blemish came by way of SoHi, which prevailed 26-22 when the teams met midway through the year.

Only 20 players will make the trip for Homer because of travel costs.

Eielson at Nikiski, 11 a.m. Saturday

The Bulldogs earned a share of the Greatland Conference title thanks to a 51-12 win over the Ravens last week.

Nikiski is 7-1 overall, the only defeat coming against fellow one-loss squad Barrow.

The winner gets either Barrow or Monroe in the small-schools state championship game, scheduled for noon Oct. 15 at Chugiak.
