Bucs topple Oilers in 13 innings
Joe Winterburn hit a two-run home run off Tyler Blum in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift the Anchorage Bucs to a 6-4 Alaska Baseball League win Tuesday over the Peninsula Oilers at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.
With the loss, the Oilers drop to 16-8 in the ABL but hold a three-game lead over the Bucs (14-12) for first place. The Mat-Su Miners are in third at 13-13, while the Anchorage Glacier Pilots hold fourth at 13-16. The Athletes in Action Fire are in fifth at 10-17.
The Oilers face the Glacier Pilots at 7 p.m. today at Mulcahy.
On Tuesday, Ryan Palermo reached on a Patrick Wisdom error to start the rally in the 13th. A Logan Davis sacrifice bunt moved Palermo to second. After Matt Harjung bumped Palermo to third on a ground-ball out, Winterburn sent the ball over the wall in left field.
It was Blum's second blown save in the past four games as he took the loss. Braden Shipley, who started the game at shortstop, earned the win in relief for Anchorage.
The Bucs had a golden chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth, but Mark Winkelman escaped a bases-loaded jam after he relieved Cameron McVey, who allowed a double and issued an intentional walk to lead off the inning.
With one out and the bases jammed, Boomer Collins grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.
Peninsula fought back from an early four-run hole.
Anchorage took a 2-0 lead against Peninsula starter Gabriel Asakura in the bottom of the second. Davis and Harjung loaded the bases with consecutive singles following a Davis Morgan walk, and Asakura walked Winterburn to force in a run. Shipley's sacrifice fly to right field then scored another.
Ryan Griffith, making his first start this season, lasted five innings and allowed two runs on two hits for the Bucs, walking four and striking out five.
However, Asakura didn't have the command he's possessed most of the season.
Entering the game, the native of Brazil had issued nine walks in 24 innings. On Tuesday, he yielded three free passes and plunked a batter in throwing 72 pitches over four innings.
A one-out walk to Winterburn started another rally for the Bucs in the fourth. Landon Anderson smacked a two-out single following a Shipley fly out. Winterburn and Anderson then scored to make it 4-0 on a double by Keenan Cook, who was thrown out to end the inning when he tried to stretch the hit into a triple.
Peninsula cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth after Tanner Rust walked to lead it off and Jeff Yamaguchi was hit by a pitch. That set the table for Ryan McChesney, who delivered a double to score Rust. An infield single from Manny Acosta then scored Yamaguchi to make it 4-2.
In the seventh, the Oilers strung together three hits to even the score at 4.
Ryan McChesney and Acosta started the rally with back-to-back singles and moved to second and third, respectively, on a Zach Kirksey sacrifice bunt. After McChesney scored on a wild pitch and Nate Ring walked, Chris Mallory sent a game-tying single to left center field. Troy Channing ended the inning when he into a double play with the bases loaded.
The squads then played five scoreless innings.
James Mannara had his best outing of the campaign in relief for the Oilers, pitching four shutout innings after he replaced Asakura. Mannara had two strikeouts to go with a pair of walks. Winkelman also pitched four shutout innings out of the bullpen.
Peninsula shortstop Mike Miller, the league's leading hitter with a .409 average, sat out due to an ankle injury he sustained during the ABL All-Star Game. He is day-to-day.
