Grabbed the Model 1897 Winchester 12 gauge pump shotgun and a handful of #5 shot shells. Heard rooster pheasants cackling along the heavily weeded creek bottom. Accompanied by our rat terrier, Mitsy. She loves to hunt with me. PineandLakes.com Illustration.

Tomorrow is special because it is the first day of the year where I don't mind Christmas things being shoved down my throat. My problem is the "Christmas season" starts a little earlier every year. PineandLakes.com Illustration

I discovered another form of motivation as well. When I run on a treadmill I can bring my tablet and watch Netflix while I work out. Does that make me sound like a lazy millennial? It probably does, but how lazy can I be if I'm exercising? PineandLakes.com Illustration

One of the activities I detested was having to go back to the cornfield to pick up the ears of corn that the one row Woods Brothers picker left on the ground. I was of the opinion that if that corn were left in the field, the pheasants and other wildlife would have an easier winter. PineandLakes.com Illustration

Deer hunting equipment and clothing have undergone extreme changes from those early days. Blaze clothing has replaced the old red wool worn by earlier generations. I have a wonderful heavy, red wool coat that once was worn by some hunter. It hangs in our closet only to be worn to town on occasion. PineandLakes.com Illustratino

At dawn we pushed on toward Idaho and the glory of Coeur d'Alene Lake, still astonished at the sights revealed at every curve and mountain pass. We'd been through all these places before, but never been struck so strongly by their natural beauty. PineandLakes.com Illustration
